Young Workers' Resource Centre

The YWRC vision is to have “Young People that are informed, productive and empowered in the workplace.

A workforce that is sustainable and understands the give-and-take aspect of paid employment and voluntary work”.

In order to reach their vision the YWRC offers workshops and unit standard delivery to Waikato secondary schools, tertiary institutions, youth groups, private training institutes and community organisations about employment relations.

These well-balanced workshops incorporate real life examples and include topics such as:

- Good faith

- Health and safety

- Sexual harassment

- Discrimination

- Minimum rights

- Employment agreements

...and much more.

The employment relations education the YWRC provides is their core business because it is an effective way to inform young people on how to approach employment situations.

Nonetheless through their education they have learnt often young people require more support and this is why the YWRC offers a drop-in centre. This centre is a free service where young people can access employment related information, advice and referrals.

YWRC also holds office hours at the University of Waikato, Wintec and Dinsdale Community Link to ensure young people from around the city can access their services easily. The drop-in centre services can also be accessed via email, phone and facebook.

Some examples of how youth have recently utilised the drop in centre include:

- Asking for help

- Understanding their employment agreement

- Seeking advice on ending an employment relationship

- Developing an action plan in regards to sexual harassment.

Furthermore the YWRC provides a get-a-head employment skills program to education providers. this program is designed to provide participants with a number of skills that will assist them with job seeking, breaking stereo types, interview skills, relationships building and much more.

To book a workshop or program, use the drop-in centre or become a change maker please contact the YWRC on the supplied details.
