Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust NZ

There are significant numbers of grandparents/kin raising their grand/kin children as the primary caregiver. The grandparents/kin take on the responsibility for these children because of the severe social, emotional and psychological problems experienced by their own adult children or partners, which have put their grand/kin children at risk.

Our aim is to provide support to Grandparents/kin who are primary caregivers to grand/kin children in difficult circumstances. To ensure fair treatment from the legal and child protection services in New Zealand, in order to stabilise and normalise the life of the children involved.

We are a Charitable Trust borne from local needs identified within North Shore City where a group of concerned Grandparents/kin whose role is primary caregiver of grand/kin children, found themselves in a unique and stressful situation.

Many interested grandparents met to discuss this situation at a public meeting which led to further investigation in other parts of greater Auckland and beyond. From the information gathered a support group was formed to facilitate the processes of support, action and research. This research has uncovered the phenomenon of significant numbers of grandparents/kin raising their grand/kin children as the primary caregiver. The grandparents/kin take on the responsibility for the care of these children because of the severe social, emotional and psychological problems being experienced by their adult children or partners - putting children at risk. They perform this role out of love and concern for their children and their grand/kin children.

We provide support to grandparents/kin who are the primary caregivers. We provide opportunities for the grandchildren/kin to meet others in the same situation. We raise awareness as to the unique aspects involved in the role of grandparents/kin in this primary caregiver role. We undertake research to establish the depth of a grandparent's/kin commitment in the primary caregiver role and respond accordingly. We facilitate change in the legal and child custody system. We have resources to share with grandparents/kin raising their grandchildren.

We offer a handbook for grandparents/kin, which deals with many of the issues they will face. It is 76 pages long and is available free to grandparents/kin upon request. We also post out monthly newsletters to all our members.
