Aviva (formerly Christchurch Women's Refuge)

Aviva is an independent and specialist Canterbury-based family violence prevention and intervention agency.

We are committed to supporting families and individuals become violence-free and lead fulfilling lives, together or apart. As New Zealand’s first refuge we have been strongly associated with services for women, yet since 1998 we have offered specialist children’s services and have now further evolved our vision and services to work with men who are using family violence. This reflects our belief that family violence solutions must acknowledge, incorporate and support all members of a family to overcome violence and achieve their potential.

As of July 2016 our services consist of:

  • Free 24-hour phone support via 0800 AVIVA NOW, for anyone needing information or advice
  • Personalised support for children, women and men and assistance to access to other agencies or services
  • Access to temporary, safe accommodation
  • Safety planning to minimise risk and identify ways to remain safe
  • Access to Ministry of Justice approved education programmes for women, men and children
  • Proactive contact and support for women and men named on Police Incident Reports relating to family violence
  • Shine [email protected], a service which improves the physical security of the homes of adults and children at highest risk of repeat family violence, so that they do not have to leave their home to become safe
  • ReachOut specialist support for men who have used family violence but want to become violence-free
  • Specialist Peer Support from women and men who have overcome family violence to others on their own journey
